Crew members have been evacuated from the anti-whaling boat, ‘Brigitte Bardot’ after its damaged pontoon fell off in rough seas.

It was chasing a Japanese whaler in the Southern Ocean last week when it was hit by a rogue wave and damaged.

The ship, from the Sea Shepherd organisation, is under escort by the ‘Steve Irwin’ and is heading back to Fremantle.

Seven of its 10 crew members are now aboard the ‘Steve Irwin’.

Skipper Paul Watson says the boat should be able to be fixed.

“I don’t think there’s any danger of it sinking,” he said.

“The ‘Brigitte Bardot’ is almost unsinkable because of how it’s constructed but it could be disabled and not able to continue under its own power.”

The ‘Steve Irwin’ will refuel in Fremantle and head back out to the Southern Ocean.
